17th September at Gronie
On 17th September 1939 twelve insurgents and scouts were executed at Gronie. The events that took place 75 years ago were commemorated during the celebration at the monument erected in the place of execution. As every year during the anniversary a mass for the murdered ones was said in St. Adalbertus basilica. It was celebrated by father Mirosław Godziek, the parish priest. Then commemoration continued at the monument at Gronie where the town authorities, veterans, pupils and color guards of different schools and scout patrols gathered. Going back to the events from 75 years ago, it was mentioned that books with warrants of arrest ( Sonderfahndungsbuch) containing the names of Polish patriots were created before the outbreak of the war. The execution at Gronie was also an act of revenge for the involvement of our town’s volunteer troops which included mainly former Silesian insurgents. The roll call of honor also included names of civilians who died in September 1939 and those murdered in Katyn, Ostaszkow, Miednoje and Charkov. Marek Balcer, the Mayor of Mikołów, Tadeusz Socha, Chairman of the Town Council and Urszula Wieczorek-Pajonk, councilor laid a wreath at the monument on behalf of the town authorities. Wreaths were also laid by pupils, scouts and veterans.
